As the name implies the Shetland Sheepdog, or Sheltie, hales from the brooding and barren Shetland Islands, located between Scotland and Norway. In the Middle of the 19th century, the thrifty islanders began to breed small, agile dogs to keep the ponies and sheep out of their precious crops. By the 20th century, fanciers had began importing Shelties to America, where their popularity continues to grow. Here's a Sheltie on a tapestry pillow.
